Home to what many consider to be the finest tailing action in the state, anglers travel from near and far to witness the grass flats of Espiritu Santo Bay and Matagorda Bay coming alive during the usual calmer morning periods. While Port O’Connor may be nationally renown for its shallow water fly fishing though, what few realize is the incredible tarpon fishing that is available each summer and fall along the beaches for huge +150lb migratory fish coming from Mexico. Seen in schools ranging anywhere from a dozen to several hundred fish, Port O’Connor offers anglers some of the first shots at tarpon as they enter the state, greatly increasing their odds of hooking up on flies. Hosting a healthy population of pelagic species as well throughout most of the warmer months, the gin clear waters of the Coastal Bend are a favorite among many.
